Business for the long term

Harnessing renewable energies

Concerns about climate change, along with rising energy prices, create both challenges and opportunities for UK businesses.

Climate business is financing the growing market that is renewable energies, and supports innovations in energy efficiency and clean technology.

At HSBC we have created a dedicated climate business team, with relationship managers who are trained in renewable energies and the climate proposition. In this way, we aim to help the growth of industries dedicated to combating climate change and to help finance a low carbon economy.

Our policy to analyse risk

In certain industries, inherent risks exist for sustainability and HSBC exercises caution when providing financial services to these sectors.

We follow detailed sustainability policies for all financing in these identified key sectors; forest land and forest products, mining and metals, chemicals, freshwater infrastructure and energy.

If you request finance in any of these areas, a formal process is followed to help analyse, manage and report on any associated risks. We also have a defence equipment policy which clarifies our approach to companies involved with weaponry.
