Activating your card

As soon as you receive your new credit card, sign the back and choose one of two easy ways to activate it:

1. By Personal Internet Banking
Log-on to Internet Banking, click on 'Activate new card' and follow the instructions.

2. By phone
Call 0800 3281 370 and speak to a member of our Customer Services team.
Lines open 8am to 10pm every day

Please note, if you have an additional cardholder on your account, both cards will be activated at the same time.

 

Using your card

To help you get the most out of your credit card, we've made it easy to access and control your money both at home and abroad.

At home:

Pay for goods in shops and restaurants
Enjoy the convenience of using your card in any outlet that displays the logo on your card (VISA or MasterCard)

Shop safely online
When you buy goods and services online, make your payments even more secure by registering with:

Cash withdrawals
Credit card customers can get cash withdrawals at any HSBC cash machine for a fee. Non HSBC cash machines may also charge a fee. Also please bear in mind that unlike purchases, interest is charged from the date transactions are applied to your account until payment is received. Find out more about credit card fees

Abroad:

Withdraw local currency
Whether you're away on business or on holiday, you can use cash machines abroad whenever you need extra local currency. Fees apply and non-HSBC cash machines may also charge a fee. Tell us you're travelling
We automatically monitor accounts for unusual foreign transactions, so let us know before you travel abroad. We can check your contact details, reduce the chance of us declining a holiday transaction and it only takes a few minutes to set up:

  • Log-on to Internet Banking and click 'going abroad'
  • Call Customer Services on 08457 404 404

Please note, only a primary cardholder can give us travel notifications.

 

Lost or stolen

Call our emergency line as soon as you realise that your card(s) have been lost, stolen or may be misused. We will cancel your card(s) immediately and issue you with replacement(s).

Card security

There are lots of ways we can work together to keep your credit card safe whether you're at home or abroad, including:

  • Protecting your card and PIN
  • Covering your PIN when you enter it to stop others seeing it
  • Never divulging your PIN to anyone, even if they claim to be police or HSBC staff
  • Checking statements and query transactions you don't recognise
