In 2007, we launched a programme to cut paper use by encouraging our customers to move to online bank statements. For every customer that switched we'd plant a tree in the virtual forest, and for every 20 virtual trees, we promised to plant a real tree.
During 2007 no less than 400,000 customers made the switch.
Working with the independent charity Trees for Cities by the end of the planting season in March 2009 we will have planted 20,000 trees. Parks, schools and open spaces in Brighton, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, Reading, London and South Derbyshire will all have benefited from this initiative.
Although the scheme has now closed, You can still make a difference and help us reduce our impact on the environment through saving paper by switching off your paper statement. In return you'll be able to grow and dedicate your very own virtual tree in the HSBC Virtual Forest. Find out how you can switch off your paper statements.
Simply choose 'My details' from the left-hand menu within Internet Banking, then select 'Change my statement delivery' and follow the quick instructions. Repeat for each of your eligible accounts, as required.
