We never take the decision to close a branch lightly and we understand it can be unsettling for the local community. In recent years our customers have changed the way they choose to bank with us and increasingly are using telephone, internet and mobile to complete their banking. As a result, branch usage is falling, and across our branch network over the past five years we have seen footfall decline by almost 40% with this decline continuing year on year. As a result therefore we sometimes have to make the difficult decision to close a branch. HSBC fully supports, and follows, the industry wide Access to Banking Standard introduced by UK Finance in May 2017 (and previously the Access to Banking Protocol). The attached reports summarise the impact assessment and local community engagement in the event of the closure.
