If you're going abroad, the last thing you want to think about is something going wrong, but having insurance for your trip can help protect you if it does. We take a look at the benefits.

Explore HSBC insurance

When you're in the middle of planning your journey, booking your tickets and trying to cram your belongings into a suitcase, buying insurance for your trip can seem like a bit of a chore. But going abroad without this vital travel protection can leave you vulnerable if things don't go according to plan.

Travel insurance can help you if...

...your holiday plans are disrupted

Most holidays run smoothly, but there's always the risk of some sort of disruption, from airlines going bust to natural disasters. You'll be disappointed if something goes wrong, but with the right travel protection, you won't be out of pocket. Travel insurance can help you get back the costs of things like accommodation, car hire and transport if your holiday is cancelled or cut short.

...you fall ill or have an accident

According to the Association of British Insurers, the average claim for medical expenses is around £1,300. But they say it's not uncommon for medical bills to reach tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds -one claim for treating a stroke in the USA cost an eye-watering £760,000.1

Even if you're travelling in Europe, travel protection is worth having, as the benefits you receive under the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) don't necessarily cover all costs and won't pay for getting you home. Knowing your travel insurance will help if you come down with something serious will give you peace of mind. Look for travel insurance that covers the costs of getting you home too.

...you get hurt while having fun

Having the right travel protection means you can enjoy water sports, bungee jumping or horse riding with confidence. However, make sure you check exactly what activities your travel insurance covers, or you could face big expenses if you're injured while taking part. Some insurers offer special packages for winter sports trips.

...your stuff gets lost or stolen

Having your suitcase go missing or your phone, cash or travel documents stolen can make you miserable on your trip. With the right travel insurance, you'll have the peace of mind of knowing your stuff is covered. Again, make sure you check your policy to be sure that it covers all your gadgets and other important possessions. Also check what's covered here under your home insurance policy.

...you need legal advice

Hopefully, you won't get into trouble with the law while you're away or need legal help related to your trip. But if you do, travel insurance that includes legal cover and advice will be invaluable.
