Together, we can still make a big difference

A huge thank you for helping us raise more than £1.4 million so far for The Big Night In Appeal. Donations are still being accepted to help vulnerable people affected by coronavirus.

BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief have come together as part of The Big Night In Appeal

The Big Night In, screened on BBC One in April, celebrated the hope, bravery and kindness we’re witnessing in these unprecedented times.

We’ve donated £1 million to The Big Night In Appeal to match the donations you’ve already made through the link below1.

How this money will help

Support where it’s really needed

Everything raised by the appeal will be split equally between Comic Relief and BBC Children in Need – and used to fund local charities and projects in the UK, helping vulnerable people who’ve been most affected by the crisis2.

What is The Big Night In?

An epic night of entertainment shown on BBC One in April

With big surprises, money-can't-buy prizes, and live music performances from the artists’ homes. All hosted by stars including Matt Baker, Zoe Ball, Lenny Henry, Davina McCall and Paddy McGuinness.

Other ways we’re supporting the UK

A vital connection for vulnerable customers

In the last few weeks we’ve reached out to 300,000 potentially at-risk customers to let them know how we can support, including how we can help set them up on telephone or digital banking channels. With over-70s told to self-isolate, many people wouldn’t otherwise have been able to manage their finances.

Here are a couple of highlights from our branch colleagues:

Polly, Truro - “It has been nice to offer some useful tips and reassure our customers. One lady in particular said to me, ‘I haven’t spoken to anyone in nearly five days! It’s just nice to have a chat,’ which has been the absolute highlight of my day. I hope it made her day brighter too!”

Josh, Norwich - “I spoke to a customer this morning, and I was the first person he’d spoken to for eight days! Didn’t need anything from us, but thanked me for calling and checking up on him.”

There’s still time to donate – until 30 June 2020

1HSBC UK pledged to match the first £1 million in donations made through our Big Night In Appeal webpage. The £1.4 million total is made up of £437,000 donated by you and £1 million donated by HSBC UK (representing the full value of HSBC UK’s pledge to match donations up to £1 million). No further matching donations will be made.

2All donations will be split between two charities. 50% of donations will be paid to Comic Relief which is the trading name of Charity Projects (registered charity in England and Wales, charity number 326568 and in Scotland, charity number SC039730) and 50% of donations will be paid to BBC Children in Need (registered charity in England and Wales, charity number 802052 and in Scotland, charity number SC039557). The Big Night In Appeal is a joint initiative between Comic Relief and BBC Children in Need. HSBC UK’s matching donations are expected to reach £1m.
