Open Banking Frequently Asked Questions

Open Banking allows you to securely connect accounts from other banks to your HSBC UK Mobile Banking app. This means you can view and manage all your accounts in one place, making it easier to keep track of your finances.

You'll need to be registered for online banking with each financial provider you’re using and give us your consent for your chosen third party to access your HSBC app.

If you’re adding an account for the first time, simply select the 'Connect a non-HSBC account' tile located below your HSBC accounts on the homepage. This will guide you through the set up process.

To add more accounts later, choose 'Connect a new account' using the three dots next to your account on the homepage.

Alternatively, go to your profile, select ‘Open Banking connections’, then ‘Data from other banks’, and 'Connect an account' at the bottom of the page.

You’ll need your log on details for the other bank account and will be asked to agree to share your data.

Once connected, it may take a few minutes for your account information to appear. If it doesn’t show up straight away, please log out and back on to the app.

You can connect most current accounts with online or mobile access. Some savings, investment, and mortgage accounts may not be supported.

If your bank isn’t listed, it may not currently support Open Banking. We’re working to add more providers, so please check back regularly.

No, you won’t be opted in automatically.

To take advantage of Open Banking you’ll need to provide your consent to a regulated third party.

If you’d like to use apps or websites with an HSBC UK account, you’ll need to be registered for online banking.

Open Banking regulations require you to renew your consent every 90 days to keep your information secure and ensure you’re still happy to share your data. The process is quick and may involve re-entering your security details with your other bank.

Yes, you can choose to stop sharing your data at any time and it will be stopped with immediate effect.

Log on to either your mobile banking app or online banking, select ‘Open Banking Connections’ and cancel access from the relevant apps or websites.

We’ll notify them that their access has been cancelled as this may affect the services they provide you.

You can also go directly to the third party you have shared your information with and cancel the consent you have given them.

Your data is used to display your account details, balances, and transactions within the HSBC app. We save only the necessary information and follow strict security standards to protect your privacy.

Third party apps and websites that access your payment accounts must be registered with and authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and comply with all laws and regulations, including data privacy.

You should only use third party apps and websites if they are regulated or authorised by the FCA to operate in the UK.

You can check if they’re regulated or authorised to provide Open Banking services in the UK by searching the FCA register.

If a third party asks you to share information it has to be clear what it’s going to do with it, and how long it will keep it for.

Account information is refreshed at regular points throughout the day so should never be more than a few hours out of sync. If your account isn’t updating, check your consent status, ensure your other bank isn’t experiencing issues, or try removing and reconnecting the account.

Yes, you can use the favourites option (star icon) to bring your most-used accounts to the top of your list and hide others, making it easier to access the accounts that matter most to you.

No, you can only add and manage Open Banking accounts using the HSBC UK Mobile Banking app. However, you may review and manage permissions for third parties you share your HSBC data with via online banking.
