Sending money to a company

Whether you’re paying a credit card or utility bill, we’ve prepopulated the bank account details for hundreds of major companies to help make it easier for you. So if you need help sending money to a company, follow these instructions:

Mobile banking:

  1. Once logged in, select “Move Money” and choose to “send money within the UK”
  2. Select the account you’d like to pay from, then select “Payees”
  3. Select “Pay someone new” then “Select a company”
  4. Search for the company and follow the on-screen instructions

In most cases, sending money to companies is instant. However this can vary, so please ensure you check when reviewing your payment details for accurate timescales.

Top tip: If you are paying back your HSBC Credit Card manually every month, consider setting up a direct debit to ensure you don’t miss a payment. For more information, check out our credit card repayments page.

Fraud advice: Stop and check: Scams will pressurise you to make immediate payments. Please be sure this is a genuine request - if someone claiming to be from the police, utility company or similar has asked you to do this, contact them on a trusted telephone number or email address to check.

Online banking

  1. Once logged in, select “Move Money” and choose the account you'd like to pay from
  2. Select “Pay or transfer” and then “New payee”
  3. Select “Payee lookup” and enter company name
  4. Select the company and follow the on-screen instructions

Generating a transaction code with your Secure Key

When sending money to someone for the first time, to keep you safe we will ask you to authorise the transaction by generating a one-time transaction code on your Digital Secure Key or physical Secure Key. Using a Digital Secure Key means you only need your digital device to make payments. Find out how to upgrade to one here.

This is a security step that verifies your credentials. It also increases security against possible fraud attacks which can be potentially caused by malware.

If you set the payment up through the mobile banking app, you can authorise the transaction easily using biometrics (touch/faceID). If you set the payment up through online banking, you will need to generate a transaction code using your Secure Key. If you need any help, check out the below guides and frequently asked questions.

Steps to generate a transaction code if you are a Digital Secure Key user:   

1. Go to your secure key and tap on the transaction tab.

 

On your Secure Key, enter the last 4 digits of the account number / company reference or credit card number, ignoring any letters or special characters.  

2. Then input the whole payment amount including pence, ignoring the decimal point.

e.g. £245.67 should be input as 24567

3. Then use Touch/Face ID or your Digital Secure Key password to generate your transaction code. 

 

Enter the 6-digit transaction code in Online Banking and select continue to complete your payment.

Steps to generate a transaction code if you are a physical Secure Key user:

1. Press and hold the green button to turn your secure key on and enter your PIN.

 

When 'HSBC' shows on screen, press the yellow button.

 

On your Secure Key, enter the last 4 digits of the account number / company reference or credit card number, ignoring any letters or special characters.  

2. Then input the whole payment amount including pence, ignoring the decimal point.

Note: if you input more than 8 numbers they will start dropping off to the left of the display

3. Then press the yellow button to generate your transaction code.

 

Enter the 6-digit transaction code in Online Banking and select continue to complete your payment.

Sending money to your family or friends

If you are paying family, friends or any other person for the first time, just ask them for their sort code and account number. Then follow these instructions: 

Mobile banking

  1. Once logged in, select “Move Money” and choose to “send money within the UK”
  2. Select the account you’d like to pay from, then select “Payees”
  3. Select “Pay someone new” then “using UK bank details” or “using mobile number (PAYM)”
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the payment

Sending money to family or friends using the mobile banking app

Online banking

  1. Once logged in, select “Move Money” and choose the account you'd like to pay from
  2. Select “New payment or transfer” and then “New payee”
  3. Select “enter details”
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the payment

Your money should reach the payee immediately subject to our standard checks. Once the payment has been made it cannot be recalled so please make sure the details you use are correct.

Sending money between your HSBC accounts

Everyone needs to move money between personal accounts from time to time. Whether your are adding to savings or dipping into them, here’s how you do it:
